Hongyan Yang

Hongyan Yang, is currently pursuing her Ph.D. Degree in Architecture at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She joined the program in summer 2013. She holds a B.S. in Urban and Rural Planning & Resource Management and a B.A. in English, a M.S. degree in Human Geography. As an undergraduate she began leading research projects examining the role of cultural landscapes in shaping place identities, an experience that gradually shaped her interests in visual art studies. She has joined government sponsored artist resident programs in China and participated in an arts and community engagement project in Milwaukee. She has published a few articles and one book chapter based on her research projects on art districts in China. Recently, she extended her interests in cultural landscape to material culture studies, exploring the roles of domestic landscapes in revealing social history. Hongyan has presented several papers at conferences of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) and the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers (APCG). She received the APCG Committee Award for Excellence in Area Studies in 2012. She was awarded the National Scholarship of China in 2013 and UWM’s Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship for the 2013-2014 academic year.
